EDP is a global company and one of the largest players in the European energy sector, ranking as the 4th largest producer of wind energy. EDP takes pride in being a leading utility integrated into the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes (World). Its mission is to build a new energy future by promoting renewable sources.

To achieve this, EDP has committed to:

  • Being 100% green by 2030;

  • Targeting 20 GW of renewable installed capacity by 2025;

  • Innovating to shape the future of the energy sector;

  • Empowering communities to live more sustainably.

EDP's energy strives to create a better future, fueled by people from 3 continents, 29 markets, and 44 different nationalities.  EDP will harness the power of wind, sun, and water to lead the global energy transition. Together, EDP will become fully green, choosing the Earth as its guiding principle.

THE CHALLENGE

.

The global shift to renewable energy is essential for reducing carbon emissions, and for the ecological transition as a whole. However, it brings challenges because renewable sources like wind and solar are intermittent, i.e. you only generate energy when the sun is shining or the wind is blowing. For this reason, energy production from these sources doesn't always align with demand, leading to issues like shortages, grid instability, price swings, and even negative prices when there’s too much energy supply. Ensuring energy security and grid stability is key to a successful energy transition.

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) offer a solution by storing excess renewable energy produced during times of surplus, like sunny or windy periods, and then releasing it when demand is higher, or renewable generation drops. This ability of batteries to shift energy through time makes renewable energy more reliable, prevents curtailment of renewable energy generation, avoids power shortages and reduces the need for fossil fuel backup plants.

The challenge that we propose is to produce the most precise market forecasts for the United Kingdom, so that our battery can optimize its trading strategy, maximizing the profitability while allocating renewable energy in the most efficient manner and supporting a smooth transition to a clean energy system.

ARE YOU READY TO LEAD THE ENERGY TRANSITION?
